How do you begin the new year? Paul and I begin each year with two long-standing traditions: Our first New Year tradition starts early on January 1st. Wearing our pajamas, we cross the US-Canada border for a family breakfast. Yes, international borders notwithstanding, pajamas are de rigueur for everyone. As if we all just rolled out of bed and ambled into Mamma’s kitchen. Our pajama-clad clan celebrates its Greek and Italian heritage, beginning with traditional Greek carols (κάλαντα). Clanging triangles are the classic accompaniment, but jangling keys surely suffice.
“Καλή Χρονιά, Καλή Χρονιά / Χαρουμένη Χρυσή Πρωτοχρονία / Happy New Year, Happy New Year / Joyful Golden New Year”
Then, endless cups of caffe latte complement two essential Italian holiday baked sweets: Panettone, a tall bread studded with candied fruit. And pandoro, a towering bread shaped like an 8-pointed star and dusted with powdered sugar. Lastly, we cut the traditional Greek New Year’s cake, vasilopita (βασιλόπιτα). Our second New Year tradition runs through the year. Because Paul and I choose One Word to clarify, crystallize, and catalyze change during all 12 months. We’ve followed the One Word practice for years. For us, it’s proven more thoughtful, intentional, and helpful than typical New Year resolutions. Because you, too, may find the practice meaningful, purposeful, and powerful, we’re sharing why and how to find your One Word. Reader, however you begin, whatever the journey may bring, here’s to a joyful golden 2026 for you and yours! “Set-jetting,” the catchy linguistic twist on “jet-setting,” is the popular tourism trend of visiting destinations where movies and shows were filmed. Set-jetting tourism has transformed national destinations and individual filiming locations. Think of New Zealand, thanks to the Lord of the Rings. Or Croatia, due to Game of Thrones. Or Singapore, where spectacular nature, landmarks, and cultures have captured moviegoers’ imaginations since the 1900s. In 1931, the action-adventure Bring ‘Em...
Much of the world now celebrates the New Year on January 1st. But it wasn’t, and still isn’t, always the case. For instance, Lunar New Year begins with the second new moon after the winter solstice. Lunar New Year 2026 begins on February 17, 2026, and the year ends on February 5, 2027. This Lunar New Year commemorates the Fire Horse sign, its first appearance since 1966. The Fire Horse expresses strength, confidence, and determination; and symbolizes optimism, independence, and momentum....
Two cities in two countries share a Natural Wonder of the World: Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, and Niagara Falls, New York, USA. These two cities share the thunder and glory of Niagara’s Horseshoe Falls curving between both nations. They also share the same tourism tagline: “Honeymoon Capital of the World.” But do you know why, when, and how Niagara Falls earned this romantic reputation? Well, the romantic history dates to the gilded dawn of the 19th century. When two gorgeous and glamorous...
