✨The newest bridge in New York

The Empire State’s brand-new bridge opened on June 13th, 2025, in the 19th-century town of Brockport, New York.

The serpentine bridge gently curves around the existing guard gate and gracefully spans the Erie Canalway.

The stair-free design incorporates slopes, promenades, and landscaping to make the Brockport Pedestrian Bridge and environs accessible to everyone.

It’s a fitting (and fabulous) demonstration of the Erie Canal’s two centuries of ongoing transformation, connection, and inspiration.

So of course, Paul and I traveled to Brockport promptly upon arriving Stateside from Greece!

In a few days, international canal professionals and aficionados alike will gather in Buffalo, New York, for the 2025 World Canals Conference.

The international conference concludes with a one-of-a-kind celebration: A 2025 interpretation of Governor DeWitt Clinton’s 1825 Erie Canal inaugural voyage aboard the Seneca Chief.

Hundreds of volunteers worked for several years to build entirely by hand the replica Seneca Chief canal boat. The new Seneca Chief now gleams in bright yellow, jaunty green, and crisp white paint.

The Bicentennial Voyage will follow the legendary route from Buffalo in the west to Albany in the east, thence south down the Hudson River to New York City.

All along the way, the Seneca Chief will dock at Erie Canal communities to educate, engage, and inspire children and adults alike.

And surely, the beautiful new Brockport Pedestrian Bridge over the world-changing waterway should have a feature role in the Bicentennial festivities.

Reader, here’s to celebrating transformation, connection, and inspiration. In travel and in life.

Until next time,

Travel on, sparkle on, meaningfully✨

Selfie in front of the entrance to Chicago's Christmas Market

And just like that, December begins with a blizzard-worthy blast of snow, ice, and single-digit temperatures in the Midwestern USA. Paul and I are currently in Chicago, during our second week of holiday travel. Having celebrated a joyous Thanksgiving with beloved family, our hearts are warm even if our feet are cold. And, of course, we’re also visiting European-inspired Christmas Markets in North America. With this year’s focus on the Christmas Market experience domestically, rather than...

Bright colorful mosaic on an alley on a grey day with the quote "Tell me, What is it you plan to do with you one Wild and Precious Life?"

On this grey afternoon, as we strolled through quiet streets in a quaint old Minneapolis neighborhood, a flash of sparkle suddenly caught my eye. Intrigued, I tugged Paul’s hand and drew him into a narrow alleyway. In this nondescript and unnoticed space, an artist has created a dazzling three-dimensional mosaic mural. The mosaic features two phrases: “Reach for the stars” and the final lines of a meaningful poem, “The Summer Day” by Mary Oliver. “I don't know exactly what a prayer is.I do...

Christmas lights and decorations gleam all over Europe's Christmas markets, like in this central square in Lisbon, Portugal

Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt - Vienna, Austria Across the continent from Empress Sisi’s estate in Greece, to her imperial palaces in Austria, the festive season is officially underway in Europe. Traditional Christmas Markets are open daily in the capital, Vienna. Elegant Christmas lights sparkle in every district. Ethereal classical music and carols resound in every neighborhood. (we can’t help but wonder if Empress Sisi found the formal court ceremonies and opulent palace extravagances more...
