Metropolitan Athens sprawls from the historic city center across countless suburbs, each with its local gems. But one suburb holds a Byzantine gem so rare, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Byzantine Renaissance artistry, architecture, and culture. So we took a quick journey, less than 8 miles from Athens’ historic heart to contemporary Chaidari. A shady grove marks the end of Iera Odos, the Sacred Way between ancient Athens and Eleusis once upon a distant time. Today, this grove serves as a peaceful passage to the quiet in-between the modern city and the medieval world. From its founding in the 6th century AD, the Holy Monastery of Daphni has served many purposes over 1,500 years. During its 11th and 12th century golden age, Daphni became a fortified monastery of medieval might and magnificence. Military leaders, warrior monks, and pilgrim travelers surely gasped in awe at Daphni’s monumental walls, majestic katholikon (church), elaborate marbles, and brilliant mosaics. Just as we pilgrim wanderers gasped in delight at the dazzling sacred art on high. Later, we wondered why such an important site is so quiet. Although in truth, the peaceful silence elevated the beautiful experience. Reader, here’s to the moments of beauty and peace awaiting you, in travel and in life.
