Athens, Greece, has always been known for its ancient bona fides in mythology, history, and culture. In recent years, of course, Athens has gained ever-growing recognition for its contemporary cool vibes, luxe new hotels, and chic hot spots. Indeed, in early September, the British culinary magazine olive proclaimed Athens “Cocktail Culture City of the Year” in their global Travel and Taste Awards 2026. But still, hidden gems aplenty await you. They’re the quiet in-between epic landmarks dotting the city and beautiful people making the scene. And they’re literally everywhere: On side streets in peaceful neighborhoods. Steps away from the most popular places. Or just around the corner from wherever you are. Like this lovely Japanese Garden, which Paul and I were happily surprised to discover as we walked along a heavily trafficked boulevard downtown. The Japanese Garden opened to the public in 2021, providing an intimate oasis of serenity and grace amidst the urban hustle and bustle. A red Torii Gate welcomes you, and cobblestone paths lead you through the small park. Verdant greenery, flowering bushes, Japanese red maples, and oh yes, cherry trees impart a pleasing calm. Granite benches, lanterns, and water elements invite relaxation and reflection. The Japanese Embassy and the Athenian Municipality created the park in collaboration. So, the inspiration and aesthetic are authentic to Japan, while the landscaping and materials are appropriate for Greece. Reader, here’s to unexpected moments of wonder and delight, in travel and in life.
