For generations, the Kostadimas family has celebrated life’s happy milestones – births, birthdays, baptisms, graduations, weddings, anniversaries – by making loukoumades, a classic Greek sweet treat. Loukoumades are small balls of fried dough with 4 simple ingredients: Flour, yeast, water, and olive oil. Honey, cinnamon, and powdered sugar complete the pillowy goodness. So, Paul and I were eager to sample these beloved sweet treats in Athens. Although we couldn’t help but wonder, would any live up to Yaya’s legendary loukoumades? First, we visited Athens’ most popular spot for loukoumades, the Lukumades shop in Monastiraki, one of several locations. Contemporary design, signature fillings, creative toppings, and fast, friendly service make Lukumades a social-media darling and foodie favorite. (Not to mention, a farewell treat at Athens International Airport! Look for the Lukumades stand at Departure Gate B, after Security and Duty Free.) Delicious, yes. Still, Paul and I craved something different. Something traditional. Something old school. We found the answer at Krinos, a century-old gem in Athens’ city center. Krinos opened in 1923. Today, little seems to have changed in this family-run cafe. You could, of course, order at the streetside counter, choose the toppings, and take your order to go. But we invite you to experience Krinos the nostalgic way: Stroll through the neoclassical entrance encased in marble and take a seat. Historic high ceilings, marble bistro tables, black-and-white photos, and squeaky wooden stairs recall a bygone era. And when Krinos’ loukoumades are fresh off the line, they’re almost as delicious as Yaya makes at home.
