✨The door of Venice

Venetian style architecture on the island of Corfu.

The name alone inspires the poetic imagination and evokes a poignant allure.

Corfu, or Kerkyra as the Hellenes call this Ionian Isle, served as the “door of Venice” for four centuries. And the “bulwark of Europe” whose stalwart castles withstood Ottoman sieges.

Corfu enchants with an extraordinary history, legacy, cuisine, and culture. Roman, French, British, and especially Venetian influences elegantly enduringly infuse her Ancient, Byzantine, and Modern Greek heritage.

Corfu is, quite simply, irresistible.

It’s an easy 45-minute flight from Athens to Corfu. But Paul and I highly recommend to arrive by sea, if possible, on your first visit to Corfu.

To arrive by sea rewards you with a remarkable sight: The massive medieval Old Fortress which commands the promontory and guards the capital, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This vista sets the scene for discoveries and delights ahead. So, we suggest planning your arrival day around one essential goal:

To wander away from the touristic bustle and simply get lost in Old Town Corfu.

Getting lost in Old Town Corfu invites you into her authentic ambience:

✨ Narrow alleys where laundry hangs overhead between neoclassical buildings, paint faded and crackled by the sun

✨ Ancient churches where candle-blackened frescos attest to centuries of devotion

✨ Small piazzas where children play on cobblestones and grown-ups chat over coffee

Later, after day-trippers depart and cruise ships set sail, return to the waterfront where museums, statues, and colonnades line Spianada Square, Greece’s largest public square and premier cricket pitch.

Strolling through beautiful Bosketo Park and dinner at a traditional restaurant concludes your arrival day as golden hour gives way to gleaming night.

“Gradually the magic of the island settled over us … Each day had a tranquility, a timelessness, about it, so that you wished it would never end.” (Gerald Durrell, Corfu Trilogy)

Until next time, Reader,

Travel on, sparkle on, meaningfully✨
