✨The poetry of memory

Since late spring and through the summer, Paul and I have sent you this weekly postcard from Greece. Our journey began in rural Thessaly, thence to mountainous Epirus.

As a new season begins, Paul and I remember the last eight weeks in the enchanting Ionian Islands.

Together we’ve explored the idyllic islands Lefkada and Corfu, both historically relevant, culturally rich, and naturally remarkable:

✨ Venetian castles, medieval monasteries, and tiny villages immersed in centuries-old traditions.

✨ Legendary sites like King Odysseus’ ship-turned-to-stone, Pontikonisi, and Empress Sisi’s poignant private escape, the Achilleion Palace.

✨ Extraordinary beaches of white stone and golden sand, washed by turquoise waters.

✨ Dramatic mountains swathed in lush green forests and studded with hardy olive groves.

It’s time for us to turn to the Greek mainland, where more treasures await on and off the beaten path.

Time to bid adieu to Greek island life, at least for the time being. But rest assured, we’ll return.

On Corfu, for example, high season is Spring, when Pascha (Greek Easter) unfolds in splendor. As the “door of Venice” for 400 years, Corfu Town celebrates like nowhere else.

Then there’s Crete, Greece’s largest island and a region in its own right. Although resorts and resort towns close during the quieter months, of course, Crete is a real year-round island and four-season destination.

“To me there is no season so lovely as the autumn … the poetry of memory is in every drooping flower and falling leaf.” (Letitia Elizabeth Landon, 1837)

Reader, may your summer journeys echo joyfully in memory. And autumn’s adventures unfold beautifully, in travel and in life.

Until next time,

Travel on, sparkle on, meaningfully✨
